Instructional Design Services - Alternative Learning

For twelve years Instructional Design Services has provided support to the College’s Distance Learning System. The system distributes learning to all major college sites. Each quarter during the academic year a smorgasbord of 20 plus classes are offered to 300 plus students.

Metro’s Interactive Television is integrated with Omaha’s cable provider to allow classes to be delivered live throughout the community, and interconnects to a state wide network to offer classes at select locations within Nebraska.

Originally, Microwave/ITFS was used to transport learning over the system but in 1999 the system was transitioned to an ATM backbone.

Each classroom serves a dual role as an origination or receive site. The rooms are furnished with a client computer running classroom management software. Resources for learning activities include a visual presenter, VCR, a networked multimedia computer, instructor and student cameras, microphones, and student response panels for live quizzes and feedback to questions.

Design and Support Services offers its full complement of Services to faculty using the Distance Learning system. Design and Support Services teams with faculty to supply orientation and training on using the hardware and software in the distance learning classrooms. Team members are available for brainstorming with faculty on how to develop active learning activities and strategies for distance learning.
