Study Abroad Program

Spanish 175

Credit Courses Abroad:  Spanish in Andalucia, Spain

Students will research and then visit the cities and monuments of Madrid, Toledo, Cádiz, Sevilla, Córdoba and Granada to experience Spanish language, culture, and the Muslim influences left by the Arab presence in Spain that lasted more than seven centuries.  We will study the cuisine, design, architecture, music, customs, geography and cultural practices of the different areas of Spain individually and present these study projects in class prior to travel.  Students will be able to use the Spanish acquired in the classroom to communicate in everyday situations in hotels, restaurants, cafés and on tours, and will be able to try a new type of cuisine and lifestyle.  By communicating with people from a different background and native language, the doors of global understanding and cultural exchange will open even further for each individual.  We will also visit Parque Doñana, one of Europe’s most important ecological reserves.  Here we will experience migratory birds and wildlife, providing them with an opportunity for comparison with the natural habitats in their own country.  An exposure to Spanish music and dance, including flamenco music and gypsy culture in Spain will also open minds to diverse music styles, compositions and dance forms.  This school of music is based on Islamic roots and was further developed by the gypsies.  A visit to a Huelva or Cadiz beach will provide knowledge of seaside living, an array of seafood so wide that there are foods we have never seen or heard of, and an unforgettable overlook of the  typical hilly, all-white villages of southern Spain.  Students will research and share findings before travel, will prepare a final project outlining their experience, will keep a travel journal in Spanish and will take a final exam upon return.
